Rita Singer<p>I know we're all a bit preoccupied with goings on in the States and whether they elect to remain a democracy or abolish it. But nevertheless, here's my humble attempt at a diversion.</p><p>I've just dotted the i-s and crossed the t-s for my introduction to the latest Honno Welsh Women's Classics volume. And because I'm in a celebratory mood, here's an extract from said intro in which I discuss the role of the Black servant Yarico and her significance for <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Victorian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Victorian</span></a> literature set in rural <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Wales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wales</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/WelshWritingInEnglish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WelshWritingInEnglish</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/BlackHistoryIsWelshHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackHistoryIsWelshHistory</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/BlackHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackHistory</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Literature</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Writing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://bydbach.hcommons.org/entanglements-of-empire/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bydbach.hcommons.org/entanglem</span><span class="invisible">ents-of-empire/</span></a></p>
Rita Singer<p>Dig a little and the life stories I find about people in <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Wales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wales</span></a> are just amazing. I was tipped off about the existence of a 44-second long clip called "Mr Amos Brown, Pig Keeper", about a man lovingly feeding his pigs.</p><p>Just a few web searches away, I have found Mr Brown's story. He was born in either 1856 or 1864 either as an enslaved person or the son of enslaved parents in Florida and Georgia. He was shanghaied and brought to Wales, from then on making his way through the world as professional magician, boxer, cyclist, sprinter, miner, you name it, before eventually turning his hand to pig farming in the Cynon Valley. He was married twice and left a gaggle of descendants who still live in Wales. Man! This needs to be honoured in the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Bywgraffiadur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bywgraffiadur</span></a>. </p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/BlackHistoryIsWelshHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackHistoryIsWelshHistory</span></a> </p><p>Film source: <a href="https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-mr-amos-brown-pig-keeper-1943-online" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/wa</span><span class="invisible">tch-mr-amos-brown-pig-keeper-1943-online</span></a></p><p>Bio source: <a href="https://www.cvhs.org.uk/hanesarchive/2017_Hanes_79.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cvhs.org.uk/hanesarchive/2017_</span><span class="invisible">Hanes_79.pdf</span></a> (pg 5)</p>
