Loops is a short video sharing platform, powered by ActivityPub and inspired by TikTok.

One challenge I had to solve was compression.

I implemented an important two stage transcoding system that first optimizes the video on device in the app, then sends it to the server for further optimization.

This means Loops servers don't need huge resources to get started, and can leverage the processing power of client devices!

So the ffmpeg library I was using for Loops was recently retired due to patents.

I spent a few hours preparing our own build to maintain support, and have forked the library and may need to pickup the torch to maintain support with newer ffmpeg versions. Oh yay.

Is there a video recording app on #FDroid (or an APK elsewhere) that makes it easy to record videos tiktok / insta style? As in push to record and you can record several separate bits one after the other and it automatically stitches it all together for you?
Or does #Loops allow to do that somehow?

I will give #TikTok one thing: Nearly all of their videos are subtitled/have captions.

The auto caption feature worked great when I was using it, too.

I can't watch with sound often, so it's frustrating seeing news clips and have no transcript. Xd

(Hoping #loops follows that trend.)

Given this information about #pixelfed and its developer, we will be closing our Pixelfed instance today. We will also be looking for a new #Instagram like platform to use. #Loops looked promising, but it is the same developer as Pixelfed. I will exiting the Pixelfed beta testing for iOS as well. Loops doesn't ingest any federated activities besides:

- Loop Video Likes
- Loop Video Shares
- Account Follows
- Comments to Loops videos
- Comments to Loops comments
- Reports about Loops content

Videos uploaded to other platforms like Mastodon, Pixelfed and PeerTube will not be included in our For You algorithm, only Loops videos will be

AR Filters are quite popular on some platforms, and they are coming to Pixelfed, Loops and Sup with our new Camera mode!

One more thing, you can create and submit your AR filters to the directory so anyone can use them too!

I've had to implement a lot more permission controls into Loops (than I had to with Pixelfed), like to not just disable comments, but to limit downloading, or disable sound reuse, disable duets and stiches, etc.

It's interesting how much more control they give to creators vs Instagram.

Can't wait to ship the Sound Library, Duets, Stitches and Comment Video Replies to the Loops app, and the backend source code so you all can run your own Loops server.
