#Palestine / Photojournalist Fatima Hassona killed by IDF ahead of Cannes documentary debut

Fatima Hassona, a Palestinian photojournalist and the central figure in the documentary "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk," was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home in northern #Gaza, according to reports. The documentary, directed by exiled Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi, had been selected for the Cannes Film Festival.

Hassona, a graduate of the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza, documented the realities of life in Gaza through her photography. Hours before her death, she posted a photo of the sunset, and in a previous post, she expressed her desire for a "loud death" that would leave a lasting trace and immortal images.

The International Federation of Journalists (#IFJ) estimates that at least 157 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza. The IFJ mourned Hassona's death and condemned the targeting of reporters, calling for an immediate and independent investigation into her killing and an end to Israel's impunity.

The Cannes Film Festival will unveil its film selection under pressure over industry abuse.

Cannes president Iris Knobloch and festival director Thierry Fremaux will unveil the selection of in-competition films at a press conference in Paris.

The build-up to the festival has been overshadowed by a French parliamentary inquiry into the entertainment industry, which concluded that mistreatment of performers was "endemic".

The Cannes Film Festival finished last Saturday. As well as new movies, glamorous red carpets and — this year — overzealous security guards, it's become known for ludicrously long standing ovations. And these aren't always indicators of a good movie — Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" had the audience on their feet for seven minutes but currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%. Here's a story from the Independent about the festival's longest ever ovations. #DonaldTrump is apparently not happy with a #film that documents his rise to superstardom and the dark #secrets behind it, including a depiction of the #SpousalRape of his then-wife #Ivana.

Variety reports that the former president, who was found liable for sexually abusing another woman, #EJeanCarroll, by a #NewYork court, has sent a cease and desist letter to the team behind "#TheApprentice," which debuted at the #CannesFilmFestival earlier this May.
