Just for fun, I wrote a Python program to start with a random decimal digit, and keep adding the decimal digit until it reaches a prime number.

I'm excited to share it's found a 10997-digit long prime number, which is my new personal best largest prime! It's larger than the 37th factorial prime (3507!-1) which is 10912 digits.

I'll leave the program running overnight to see if it can find longer ones! :MOULE_Happy:

These creatures are made with an IFS which transform one arc into several connected arcs (specifically 1/6 of circumference, which gives more possibilities than other fractions). I show the results of just two iterations for several decompositions, more produces less aesthetic outcomes, and even more the result is indistinguishable from usual fractals. In this post the shapes are derived from a full circumference, next post will include other outcomes derived from other initial shapes (composed by sixths of circumferences).

Today the editorial board of _Mathematical Logic Quarterly_ (pub'd by #Wiley) resigned and launched a new #DiamondOA journal on the same topics.

See the open letter announcing their resignations and plans for the new journal.

The new journal has a German title but will publish in English, _Zeitschrift für Mathematische Logik und Grundlagen der Mathematik_.

I track these journal "declarations of independence" in the #OpenAccessDirectory (#OAD), and just added an entry for this one, at the bottom in chronological order.

I also track them — and discussions of them — in the Open Access Tracking Project (#OATP, @oatp).

“…the AIs were never able to recognize when they had not solved the problem. In every case, rather than give up, they confidently output a proof that had a large gap or an outright error.”

“The USA Math Olympiad is an extremely challenging math competition for the top US high school students… Hours after it was completed…a team of scientists gave the problems to some of the top large language models, whose mathematical and reasoning abilities have been loudly proclaimed… The results were dismal: None of the AIs scored higher than 5% overall”

I have posted the 238th Carnival of Mathematics!

If I missed something please let me know.

There is an extremely slow bit of javascript for untouchable numbers that hopefully won't make the post untouchable.

Thank you @aperiodical for organizing this.

This month we have posts from @mjd Peter Cameron, @two_star, @j2kun, Brian Clegg, @fortnow @KarenCampe, Amédée d'Aboville, Ed Vogel, @standupmaths

There was also an amazing amount of math and art being shared on blueSky with @Ayliean 's math art March prompts
