I have an odd little side project (one of many 😉) that can probably be best described as a new type of environmental sensor.

That sort of thing doesn't really fit my usual range of #HCI conferences, though, except maybe if you frame it in the context of "citizen science" or "urban sensing"? Would anyone have an idea where to publish something like this? (Open access venues strongly preferred.)

Unpopular opinion: #HCI as a field is doing way too much unpaid legwork for Big Tech. I feel like at least half of #CHI papers are some variation of "$BIG_TECH_FEATURE considered harmful", and the best-case outcome is that someone at the company in question reads it and says "Oh, interesting point, you're right, have a cookie." 😑

I think we should actually build _new_ things instead that are a) not harmful and b) not built on sand. But of course, this is harder.

I'm hiring a PhD student in Copenhagen, Denmark to do #HCI research on #privacy and #interoperability in messaging apps!

This is a fully funded 3-year position in the Copenhagen campus of Aalborg University. The student will join my project "mInt" (for "messaging interoperability" ;)) and will be co-supervised by me and @nielsvanberkel .

More info and application form here: stillinger.aau.dk/phd-stilling. Deadline is May 18.

Had the pleasure of visiting IT University Copenhagen and meet Mike, Rune and @elisamekler. I presented my research in modeling interactive experiences with "Aiming, Pointing, Steering" which won the best paper award at the CHI PLAY conference last year. The paper presents basic interaction patterns that games are built of, more info here:

📢 New publication alert! 🚀 Excited to share that our paper, "It’s Not Always the Same Eye That Dominates: Effects of Viewing Angle, Handedness and Eye Movement in 3D," will be presented at CHI 2025! 🎉👀🔄

We show that eye dominance isn’t fixed but varies with task and context—challenging common assumptions in vision science and XR research.

New washing machine was installed yesterday and today I’m seriously considering making a spreadsheet of all the programmes. Or maybe an iPhone app.

30 years ago on my Human-Computer Interaction post-grad we studied the usability failings of VCRs. It appears that washing machines are the rightful heir to this infamy.

The manufacturer is clearly aware of this as the machine has a “fuck it / don’t care” button.

Fresh from the press at Interacting with Computers (with Lianara Dreyer and Marc Hassenzahl):

We introduce the "Witness Experience Inventory", a new method to better understand how other people (not the user) experience interactions with technology in social situations. This turns out to be quite challenging, which we lament in some detail, but we also offer a middle-ground that acknowledges the complexity and produces actionable insights.

Everyday InAccessibility - Today: Robin

"My partner and I are an international #deaf couple. We want to enjoy movies together, each with #subtitles in our own language. But it’s much harder than it should be.

🎬 Cinemas don’t offer dual subtitles, so we rely on technical solutions. Yet, the few available tools are often faulty, not cross-platform, or simply unreliable.

🫠 Why is it so difficult to learn languages and enjoy movies together, accessible?"

Actually there will be two limits, which you may choose between. 512 characters, or the page I just described. The former will be the familiar informal toot, which may be written and consumed the way you do on Mastodon or any #Fedi home feed.
The paged form will each command a full B5 page (EU page standard between A4 and the smaller A5), two-up at a time. In later versions, more page options may (or may not) become available. #HCI and #UX are priorities. Also expect basic page layout options.
